I, Frank Bruno, have been training for 45 years and I’ve never met a more amazing, generous, kind beautiful person as Kai. 

People say when you get old, you’re past it. But since I met Kai, I feel 25 and I’m going to do exhibitions in boxing around the country to raise money for the Frank Bruno Foundation. Kai is a very interesting and knowledgeable person. To me, even if they charged £5,000 a session, it would be money well spent.

A year ago I attended a “Gentle Exercise” class at Waterside Gym. I had never been to a Gym before and was quite apprehensive- I needn’t have been. 

The friendliness of the staff and the gentle atmosphere was apparent as soon as I walked through the door and was given my first cup of coffee.

After a couple of weeks in the group I asked wether Kai would do some individual sessions with me – I honestly think that was one of the best things I could ever have done for myself.

I have COPD ( stage 3), Asthma and Carpel Tunnel in both wrists and at the timeI hadn’t been able to exercise at all for 12 week after  complications from minor surgery so I was not at my peak!

Kai has been brilliant with me, the sessions are varied and very much geared to what I can do that week – even if it means Kai has to throw away the  planned session and wing it  – I really have felt that it is all about me !

My confidence is higher and my anxiety around physical tasks is lower, my breathing itself is better, but more importantly for me my ability to control my breathing is vastly improved which has made a huge difference to me.

I have always felt intimidated by gyms and PTs, locked into fear that l that I would be made to do exercises that might hurt – and make me look stupid. I’ve suffered with serious lower back problems for years, which also concerned me.  

It was my sister who suggested that I meet Kai – as she was sure I would connect with them and respond to their approach.  I am so glad she did.  Kai is not only a wonderfully warm and approachable person, their knowledge and ability to translate it into easily digestible information and exercises, tailored to my needs, was refreshing, and frankly – a game changer for me.  Also, Kai never makes me do exercises that I’m nervous or anxious about, they’ll find another way to achieve the results – and Kai doesn’t believe in the no pain no gain mantra, which I believe is key for anyone living with back problems, etc.  With Kai’s guidance and support, I’ve been able to build my strength and see changes that I didn’t imagine possible.

I went to see Kai because joint pain from psoriatic arthritis meant I’d stopped enjoying playing and cycling with my two young boys. I could see the vicious cycle I’d got into where less movement was leading to less energy  and this was really getting me down. Kai worked with me through a range of exercises, taking care to try a different move if a particular position was uncomfortable. I felt encouraged at all times and never pressured, and we went over the winning exercises as many times as I needed to understand their effect and recall them alone. This process made me trust my body again and gave me the confidence to bring exercise back into my life. I thoroughly recommend Kai’s system and approach!

I have had individual sessions with Kai and taken part in group exercise activities.  Throughout all of these experiences I have found Kai to be immensely supportive, very inclusive and very attentive to our individual needs.  As someone who is hypermobile I need to be very careful about how I move my body as I can easily injure it.  Kai has introduced me to a range of exercises that help my body whilst keeping it safe.  I feel I can trust Kai to understand what is right for me and keep me safe whilst challenging me to push myself.  I think Kai is quite exceptional in the way they work with people and would thoroughly recommend them.

I’ve never been someone who spends much time in gyms having been told that I would always have limited flexibility in my right arm following treatment for breast cancer many years ago. I learned to live with the weakness until I decided that I’d actually quite like my body to work fully again and as it should. So I contacted Kai at Waterside Gym following a recommendation from a friend and kept an open mind as to whether there’d be any possible improvement. The experience was really enlightening. Kai has extensive knowledge about how the body works and once I’d explained what the issue was, they watched my weak arm in action and then devised a really easy to follow programme for me. They monitored me a couple of times as I did the exercises, which were completely tailored to my particular body strength, and within a few weeks I’d gained not only more flexibility in my arm but also more of a basic understanding of how things work and and more confidence in using my arm more readily knowing I wouldn’t injure myself. I really can’t recommend Kai enough. Kai is friendly, knowledgeable and positive about the gains that can be made within a careful and caring yet encouraging context. A really great experience.
